What is PRP and how does it help your hair?
Platelet-rich plasma is prepared from your own blood. Platelets are the repair specialists of the body: they carry growth factors that stimulate tissue regeneration, improve local blood supply and signal cells to become active. When concentrated plasma is injected into the scalp, those growth factors reach the hair follicles directly, encouraging weakened, miniaturising follicles to produce stronger, thicker hair and supporting follicles through their natural growth cycle. PRP does not create new follicles where none exist, which is why we are honest about its limits: it is a strengthening and stabilising treatment for living follicles, a supportive therapy after transplantation, and a sensible first step for early-stage thinning before surgery is even considered.
Your PRP session, step by step
A PRP appointment at our Den Haag clinic is straightforward. First, a small sample of blood is drawn from your arm, exactly as in a routine blood test. The sample is placed in a centrifuge, which spins it to separate and concentrate the platelet-rich plasma from the other blood components. The prepared plasma is then injected into the thinning areas of the scalp using very fine needles; most patients describe the sensation as brief pinpricks, and the scalp can be numbed on request. The whole visit takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and you can return to work or daily activities immediately. There is no bandaging and no visible sign of treatment beyond possible mild redness for a day.
When do you see results, and how many sessions?
PRP works with your biology, so results build gradually rather than overnight. Most treatment plans start with a short course of sessions spaced several weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions to preserve the effect; your practitioner defines the exact rhythm after examining your scalp. Over the following months, patients typically look for reduced shedding first, then improved thickness and coverage in the treated areas as follicles cycle back into stronger growth. Progress is reviewed at follow-up visits with photographic comparison. Because we treat honestly, we will also tell you when PRP alone is unlikely to satisfy your goal and a DHI or Sapphire FUE transplant would serve you better.
PRP after a hair transplant
PRP and hair transplantation are natural partners, which is why a PRP support session is included in every MyHaar transplant package. After a DHI or Sapphire FUE procedure, the transplanted follicles pass through a demanding phase of healing, shedding and regrowth. PRP supports exactly this phase: growth factors assist the healing of the recipient area, help follicles settle into their new blood supply and encourage strong early regrowth. Many transplant patients choose additional PRP sessions during the first year to support their result, and your surgeon will advise whether that is worthwhile in your case. All sessions take place at the same clinic in Den Haag, under the same medical team, within your lifetime follow-up plan.
