Hair Transplant Cost in the Netherlands (2026): Prices and Insurance

How much does a hair transplant cost in the Netherlands? In 2026, a hair transplant in the Netherlands typically costs a few thousand euros: depending on the clinic and the size of the treatment, prices range roughly from about €2,000 to well over €10,000. At MyHaar in Den Haag, Sapphire FUE starts from €1,750 and DHI from €2,500. What you actually pay depends mainly on the number of grafts, the technique and what is — or isn't — included in the price. This guide explains the main cost drivers, the hidden costs to watch for and whether Dutch health insurance pays anything.

Hair transplant cost in the Netherlands: the short answer

There is no single price for "a" hair transplant. Lowering a slightly receding hairline is a very different job from restoring a largely bald crown, which is why almost every clinic works with "from" prices and a personal quote after a consultation. To get a realistic idea of your own cost, ask three questions:

  • How many grafts do I need? This is the biggest single price factor.
  • Which technique suits me? Sapphire FUE, DHI or a combination.
  • What does the price include? Consultation, blood test, medication, aftercare, check-ups and a guarantee can make a large difference to the real total.

What drives the price of a hair transplant?

The number of grafts

A graft is a tiny unit of skin usually containing one to four hairs, taken from the donor area at the back and sides of the head and placed in the thinning area. More grafts mean a longer procedure and more work for the medical team. The figures below are only a rough guide; your real need depends on hair thickness, donor quality and the result you want.

Degree of hair loss (Norwood scale)Indicative number of grafts
Norwood 2 – slight recessionapprox. 1,000–1,500
Norwood 3 – clear temple recessionapprox. 1,500–2,500
Norwood 4 – recession plus thinning crownapprox. 2,500–3,500
Norwood 5 – larger bald areaapprox. 3,500–4,500
Norwood 6–7 – extensive baldness4,500+ (depends on donor area, sometimes over several sessions)

The technique

Sapphire FUE uses sapphire blades to open the recipient channels and suits large areas, with up to about 5,500 grafts per session. With DHI, each graft is implanted directly with a Choi implanter pen, giving close control over angle and direction. It is ideal for hairlines, eyebrows and no-shave treatments, with up to about 3,500 grafts per session. Because DHI is more precision work, its starting price is higher. Our combined MyHaar FUE protocol uses Sapphire FUE for volume and DHI to finish the front hairline; you receive its price after the consultation.

Area, density and clinic

An eyebrow transplant takes around 3–4 hours, a beard transplant 4–6 hours and a full FUE or DHI procedure 6–8 hours. The density you want and whether you prefer not to shave also affect time and price. Finally, price differences between clinics often lie in everything around the procedure: who performs it, what aftercare you get, how many check-ups there are and whether a written guarantee applies.

Hidden costs to watch for elsewhere

A low starting price is not always a low total price. When comparing clinics, check whether these are included:

  • Consultation and blood test – sometimes charged separately.
  • Medication and aftercare products – they add up.
  • PRP – often an optional extra.
  • Follow-up visits – how many, and where?
  • Extra grafts – what happens if more are needed on the day than estimated?
  • Guarantee – is it in writing, and what does a correction cost?
  • Treatment abroad – the procedure may look cheaper, but travel and accommodation, extra days off and remote aftercare belong in the calculation too.

Price per graft vs. package price

Clinics generally charge in one of two ways. With a price per graft, you pay for each graft placed. It is transparent and scales with the size of the treatment, but the final amount is only known once the actual graft count is confirmed, so ask how that count is determined and whether a maximum applies.

With a package price, you pay a fixed amount per treatment or session. That offers certainty up front, but check the maximum number of grafts included and what else is covered. Neither model is automatically better or cheaper; what matters is the total price for the same result and the same level of care.

Does Dutch health insurance cover a hair transplant?

Basic insurance (basisverzekering): a hair transplant for hereditary hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is considered cosmetic and, as a rule, is not reimbursed.

Possible exceptions: in specific cases, such as hair loss after burns, an accident, surgical scarring or a medical condition, there may be a medical indication. Reimbursement then almost always requires a doctor's referral and prior approval from your insurer, and conditions differ per insurer. Always check with your insurer before planning treatment.

Supplementary insurance (aanvullende verzekering): rarely covers hair transplants. Some policies contribute to a wig or hairpiece in cases of medical hair loss, but that is not the same as a transplant.

Payment and financing

Because most patients pay for a hair transplant themselves, it is sensible to ask about payment early. Ask about the payment options during your free consultation, so you get an answer that matches your quote. And try not to choose on price alone: the result stays visible for the rest of your life.

FAQ: hair transplant cost in the Netherlands

What is the average cost of a hair transplant in the Netherlands?

Most treatments cost a few thousand euros, roughly from about €2,000 to well over €10,000, depending on grafts, technique and inclusions. At MyHaar, Sapphire FUE starts from €1,750 and DHI from €2,500.

Will my health insurance pay for a hair transplant?

Usually not. Cosmetic hair transplants are not covered by Dutch basic insurance. Only in exceptional reconstructive cases may reimbursement be possible, with a referral and your insurer's approval.

Is a hair transplant cheaper in Turkey?

The procedure price abroad is often lower, but you need to add travel, time off and remote aftercare. At MyHaar, Turkish specialists work in Den Haag, so treatment, aftercare and check-ups happen in the Netherlands.

Are there hidden costs at MyHaar?

No. Consultation, blood test, procedure, one PRP session, medication, aftercare kit, first wash, follow-ups and the 18-month growth guarantee are included, and you receive a written quote in advance.

Can I pay in instalments?

Please ask about payment options during your consultation; the team will explain what is possible in your situation.
